- How to get insights on the competitors of your competitor
Have you considered the benefit of knowing the rankings of the competitors of your competitor?
SEMRush is capable of finding other companies, which are your competitors, who are ranking for the same kind of keywords you are targeting. The results of this analysis are ranked in a list, which gives you the estimated traffic these competitors are getting from their important keywords. Knowing their traffic levels can be helpful to you. While the traffic is only an estimate, it still has value as an “A” to “B” comparison. For instance, if company A has a traffic level of 60,000 and company B has a level of 20,000, you generally know A gets 300% more traffic than B.
A list of the competitors of your competitor
- Domain: A competitor’s website name
- Competition level: Provides an indication on the level of competitiveness for a specfic keyword ranking
- Common keywords: For the site being analyzed, this tells you the keywords that are in common with it and those keywords in the top 20 search results.
- SE Keywords: The amount of keywords in the top 20 for the site being analyzed
- SE Traffic: The total estimated monthly traffic obtained from the top 20 keywords
What You Can Do
Select your most relevant competitors and perform a complete analysis of their competitors. Try to determine the keywords that receive traffic yet could be ranked.
- Keep track of changes in keyword ranking
It’s essential to know your ranking in the search results for your targeted keywords. You want to know if your keyword rankings are increasing or decreasing. The next thing you want to do is optimize your content for the rankings that are decreasing, if possible. You can enter a variety of keywords in SEMRush or you can automatically load keywords found by SEMRush for which you are ranked. You should keep track of all those keywords weekly.
What You Can Do
Keep track of your top 100 keywords in SEMRush. Sort the list by highest traffic. Keep track of the keywords words that are decreasing in ranking. In addition, watch out for keywords that are not in the top 10 so you can optimize that content based upon suggestions offered by SEMRush. Since the keywords just below the top 10 are low hanging fruit, they are the easiest ones to take from your competitors and use to improve their ranking.
- Use suggestions provided by SEMRush to improve your ranking
SEMRush does more than assist you in tracking keywords for which you are ranking. It also provides tips on how to improve your ranking. By doing an analysis of your competitors’ ranked content, SEMRush will suggest words similar to your targeted keywords that are not currently in your content. If these suggested words are good choices for you, then you should add them to your content in order to get a boost in ranking.
What You Can Do
Do an analysis of all your content and update your site with the best suggestions!
- Discover advertising opportunities before your competitors decide to advertise
Using Google Adwords, some websites pay to get traffic that you are getting for free. Since Adwords is fairly costly, here’s a strategy to generate more money for you while saving money for them: ask these Adword advertisers, once you found them, to put their ads on your site! This would generate more revenue for you.
It’s easy to do this with SEMRush. It has a SEO analyzer that can examine all your ranking keywords and identify which companies are using these keywords to advertise. It will put the results in a chart.
The above websites pay for traffic that Petco gets organically for free.
This chart gives you the following information:
- Domain: The site paying for traffic.
- Common keywords: The keywords you rank for that they bid for.
- Ads keywords: The site’s targeted keywords.
- Ads traffic: The amount of traffic the site gets from the ads they publish.
- Ads traffic price: The site’s cost to get traffic.
For example, Amazon is one site listed in the chart.
When I click the common keywords column, I see the following information:
See the keywords for which petco.com ranks that are in the top ten keywords for which Amazon uses to advertise.
Here is the listing of several keywords for which Petco has a top 10 ranking. These keywords are also being targeted by Amazon when advertising. The highlighted keyword in red is “pets gates”. Look at the following image to see the Amazon ad as well as Petco organic search result for this keyword term in Canada.
Amazon is paying while Petco result is organic and free.
What You Can Do
SEMrush is an excellent way to discover opportunities and relationships with websites that pay for keywords that you are ranked organically.
You should try to find and contact these types of companies. Then ask them if they would like to place their ads on your site. This can be very successful if they are paying a significant amount of money to advertise for keywords for which you currently are ranked. Since they are paying Google for ads, they may be open to negotiating with you to get a better rate!
